History of Ginger Root

Ginger’s current name comes from the Middle English gingivere, but ginger dates back over 3,000 years to the Sanskrit srngaveram meaning “horn root” with reference to its appearance. In Greek it was ziggiberis, and in Latin, zinziberi

At an early date it was exported to Ancient Rome from India. It was used extensively by the Romans, but almost disappeared from the pantry when the Roman Empire fell. After the end of the Roman Empire, the Arabs took control of the spice trade from the east. Ginger became quite costly like many other spices. It is mentioned by the Romans, listed in some of the earliest Chinese herbals and regarded in Ayurvedic texts as a universal medicine.
